OUR
HISTORIC OFFICES IN EL PASEO
Visitors to our firm often ask questions about our historical building,
El Paseo, and the Street in Spain, an elaborate passageway which
runs between our offices and the De La Guerra Adobe, and Edward
Borein, the famous cowboy artist who once occupied a portion of
our office space.
For several decades after its founding by the Spanish government
in 1782, the Presidio, a military garrison, served as the political,
economic, and social center of Santa Barbara. By the late 1820’s,
the Presidio was flying the flag of Mexico and gradually falling
into disrepair and ruin following a devastating earthquake in 1812.
In 1828, Presidio Comandante José de la Guerra y Noriega
moved his family and offices into a new larger home, the Casa de
la Guerra, which quickly became the new center of human activity
in the fledgling community of retired military families. The De
La Guerra Adobe is now a state historic monument and open to the
public.
In the 1920’s, the vision of a restored and expanded Casa
de la Guerra held by architect James Osborne Craig grew into El
Paseo. The complex of shops and offices was constructed around the
venerable old adobe and created the essence of a Spanish village
which has served as the model for Santa Barbara architecture since
the city’s rebuilding following an earthquake in 1925.
Visitors to El Paseo may also want to visit El Presidio de Santa
Barbara State Historic Park at 123 East Canon Perdido Street, one-half
block north and one block east of El Paseo.
STREET
IN SPAIN
Recognized throughout the country as an architectural masterpiece,
El Paseo’s Street in Spain is a passageway between the central
courtyard and De La Guerra Street where our reception area is located.
On one side is the De La Guerra Adobe and, on the extraordinary opposite
wall, where our offices are located, there is a deep loggia on its
upper portion, below which fall a series of gigantic corbel forms
punctured by concave arches.
EDWARD
BOREIN
John Edward Borein was born in 1872 and died in Santa Barbara on May
19, 1945. Considered California’s greatest cowboy artist, his
studio in the 1930’s and 1940’s, was located in our Street
in Spain offices. The firm has a number of Edward Borein’s etchings
on display.
VENTURA
COUNTY OFFICE
In contrast to our historic offices in Santa Barbara, our Ventura
County offices are located in the high rise Morgan Stanley Tower in
Oxnard adjacent to the 101 Freeway on Vineyard Avenue. Our offices
are on the ninth floor. Directions
